The Unlimited IGTs of the Marche
IGT, or Indicazione di Geografica Tipica, is the designation that allows Italian winemakers the freedom to do as they wish with their wines. Many wineries, not excluding those in the Marche, will make IGT wines alongside their DOC or DOCG wines. Often times, a typical consumer will see IGT and think “that’s not DOCG, it’s a poorly made wine”.
The fact is, the quality level of any given wine ultimately comes down to the individual producer and what they are trying to accomplish. Some producers are looking to just pump any ol’ product to blast out to mass production. Others are working to craft a product that is a piece of quality, a work of art, a healthy addition to a diet- something meant to be appreciated. This principal can be applied to all 3 designations, and one should not overlook a wine simply because of the false pretense that IGT = low quality.
