A Pride of Place, A Respect for Life
La Cantina dei Colli Ripani, a partnership of over 330 small farmers, joined together to capture local tradition and sustainability. The cooperativo was first started in 1969 between a handful of producers in the hilltop town Ripatransone (the name translates literally to Winery of the Ripani Hills). The farmers banded together in order to 1) create a sustainable production of wine that would benefit the surrounding community and 2) craft wines that defined their region’s identity.
Today, the winery produces roughly 50,000 cases of wine per year. Their lines range from inexpensive table wines and bag-in-box, premium labels, spumante and passito wines, as well spirits and olive oils. The partnership is able to produce a decent volume while still maintaining the quality that put them on the map in the first place. This is possible because each partnered farmer has around 3-5 hectares, or about 12 acres apiece, and as you may or may not know, good wine starts on the vine.
What are the advantages of Cooperative Winegrowing?
Let’s say one vineyard on a particular hillside didn’t have such a great year – the grapes aren’t the best that they’ve seen – while on the next hillside they are having a much better year. With their range of suppliers, the co-op can select which line the particular grapes will go to. Lower quality grapes will go into making inexpensive table wines that are sold locally. Higher quality grapes can go toward their other lines such as the Pharus and the Bio.
And we can’t forget about their commitment to sustainability. As is tradition throughout the Marche, winery partners are dedicated to keeping the lands they work healthy and ready for future generations. Eco-friendly farming practices are employed to ensure not only a clean earth, but a clean wine.
